The focus of my scientific work is in the field of cell biology with particular emphasis on the question whether hazardous substances influence the cell cycle and apoptosis. Genotoxic and mutagenic substances may interact with DNA and lead to aberrant cell growth. This may in turn result in cancer development. An arrest in cell cycle progression enables the cell to repair damaged DNA and thereby avoids propagation of mutations. Another mechanism to avoid manifestation of deleterious mutations is by induction of apoptosis. Methods for the measurement of alterations in cell cycle progression and induction of apoptosis will be established. The overall goal is to determine whether chemical substances at the workplace are able to influence the cell cycle and to induce apoptosis, respectively, and to gain insight into their modes of action.
